Statements (Malfoozaat) of the Last Great Mujaddid

“Surely, Allah will send for this Ummah at the beginning of every hundred years a person who will revive its religion for it.”

(Hadith from Abu Dawud)

INTRODUCTION

As the dust of time settles from the time of inception of the Madrasah of Deoband, and the widespread appreciation of the legacy of that institute continues to consolidate itself throughout the world, it has become manifestly clear that the names of the Ulama of that institute have become indelibly engraved within our scholarly tradition as Mujaddids of recent times – those whom Allah (azza wa jal) sends periodically in order to renew the original pristine teachings of the Deen.

Authoritative scholars from the Arab lands, of the stature of Allamah Zahid al-Kawthari and Shaykh Abdul Fattah Ghuddah, who were well-acquainted with the state of scholarship around the world, have even ventured as far as averring explicitly that the sciences of the Sunnah would have disappeared completely were it not for the revival work that Allah (azza wa jal) had brought about through the Ulama of Deoband.

(see here for a sample of honest and detailed appraisals from such scholars:

)

And amongst the Ulama of Deoband, Shaykh Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi alayh) holds a unique rank, and is regarded by this august group as Mujaddid-e-millat (Mujaddid of the Nation) and Hakeemul Ummat (the physician of the Ummah).

In this respect, the Malfoothaat (statements, anecdotes, advices, prescriptions and spiritual remedies) of Shaykh Ashraf Ali Thanwi are of imperative importance to acquire guidance in every sphere of the Deen, and to achieve Islaah-e-Nafs (Self-Reformation), particularly so in an era in which tolerance of, and indifference to every form of Baatil (falsehood, deviation) has reached epidemic proportions, while the Haqq (truth) continues unabatedly to become ever-increasingly bitter and Ghareeb (strange, forlorn) as foretold by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

It is with this intention and end in view that this compilation of statements of Hakimul Ummat Hadhrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (rahmatullah alayhi) is presented to act as a spiritual and a Deeni aid and guide to the sincere reader who searches for the true Deen.

May Allah Ta’ala guide the Ummah and inspire us to submit wholeheartedly to the truth, no matter how bitter and ghareeb it becomes, and May Allah Ta’ala thus make us deserving of His Nusrat (Divine Aid), and of extrication from our current deserved state of abject decadence and humiliation
