Who Are The Muttaqeen?

Allamah Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (rahmatullahi  alayh) relates the following narrations in his Tafseer:

Tirmidhi (who classed it as a sound Hadith) and Ibn Maajah bring forward a Hadith of Abdullah ibn Yazeed (radhiyallahu anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“A servant will not go far to become amongst the Muttaqeen until he abandons that which is harmless (i.e. permissible) out of cautiousness for that which is harmful.”

Abu Darda (radhiyallahu anhu) said:

The perfection of Taqwa is that a servant fears Allah to the extent that he fears Him in respect (to a matter equivalent) to the weight of a mustard seed, and to the extent that he abandons that which he regards as Halaal, for fear of (falling into) Haraam, to act as a barrier between himself and (falling into) Haraam.”

(In the narration related by Abdullah ibn Mubarak (rahmatullahi alayh) in his az-Zuhd, Abu Darda (radhiyallahu anhu) continues with:

“…For indeed Allah has made clear to his servants that which leads them to Him. Allah Ta’ala says: ‘Whosoever does good, the equivalent to the weight of a mustard seed, shall see (the fruits of) it, and whosoever does evil, the equivalent to the weight of a mustard seed, shall see (the fruits of) it.’ Thus, never treat lightly anything of bad, (so) that you avoid it, nor anything of good, (so) that you practice it.”)

Hasan (al-Basri) said:

The Taqwa of the Muttaqeen will not cease (growing) to the extent that they (even) abandon much of Halaal out of fear of (falling into) Haraam.”

(Sufyan) ath-Thawri said:

They are only called “Muttaqeen” due to their steering clear of that which is not (normally) avoided.”

It is related from Ibn Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) that he said:

Indeed, I earnestly desire to place between myself and Haraam, a barrier consisting of Halaal which I never rupture.”

Maimoon ibn Mahraan said:

The Halaal (actions) of a man will not be safe until he places between himself and Haraam a barrier consisting of Halaal.”

Sufyan ibn Uyayna said:

The servant will not attain the reality of Imaan until he places between himself and Haraam, a barrier consisting of Halaal, and until he abandons transgression along with whatever resembles it.”
