Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) took four hundred dinars and placed them in a bag. Then he said to his servant:
“Go with this (as a gift) to Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (radhiyallahu anhu) and hang around in his house for a while until you observe what he does (with the money).”
So the servant went to him and said:
“Ameer ul-Mu’mineen says to you: ‘Use this for some of your personal needs.'”
He (Abu Ubaidah) replied:
“May Allah keep him close, and may He have mercy on him.”
Then he said (to his own servant):
“Come here, O servant. Go with these seven (dinars) to so and so, and these five to so and so, and these five to so and so…”
(He continued distributing all the money) until he had carried it out completely.
The servant (of Umar) returned back to Umar and informed him.
He found that he (Umar) had already prepared the same for Muadh ibn Jabal (too). He said:
“Go with this to Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radhiyallahu anhu) and hang around in his house for a while until you observe what he does.”
So the servant went to him and said:
“Ameer ul-Mu’mineen says to you: ‘Use this for some of your personal needs.'”
He (Mu’adh) said:
“May Allah have mercy on him and keep him close.”
Then he said (to his own servant):
“Come here O servant. Go to the house of so and so…”
In the same way (as Abu Ubaidah had earlier distributed the money to various people in need).
As the wife of Muadh (radhiyallahu anhu) watched (all the money disappearing), she said:
“By Allah! We are the destitute (too), so give us (too)!”
(By that time) there remained nothing in the cloth (bag) except two dinars, so he threw those to her.
The servant returned back to Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) and informed him. He became pleased with this and said:
“Indeed they are brothers from amongst each other. May Allah be pleased with them.”

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ اﻟﺤﺴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻴﺴﻰ، ﺃﻧﺒﺄﻧﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻤﺒﺎﺭﻙ، ﺃﻧﺒﺄﻧﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻄﺮﻑ، ﺃﻧﺒﺄﻧﺎ ﺃﺑﻮ ﺣﺎﺯﻡ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺮﺑﻮﻉ، ﻋﻦ ﻣﺎﻟﻚ اﻟﺪاﺭﻱ، ﺃﻥ ﻋﻤﺮ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺨﻄﺎﺏ، ﺭﺿﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻨﻪ ﺃﺧﺬ ﺃﺭﺑﻊﻣﺎﺋﺔ ﺩﻳﻨﺎﺭ ﻓﺠﻌﻠﻬﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺻﺮﺓ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﻟﻠﻐﻼﻡ: اﺫﻫﺐ ﺑﻬﺎ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻋﺒﻴﺪﺓ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺠﺮاﺡ ﺛﻢ ﺗﻠﺒﺚ ﺳﺎﻋﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺒﻴﺖ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺗﻨﻈﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻳﺼﻨﻊ ﻓﺬﻫﺐ اﻟﻐﻼﻡ ﺇﻟﻴﻪ، ﻭﻗﺎﻝ: ﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﻟﻚ ﺃﻣﻴﺮ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨﻴﻦ: اﺟﻌﻞ ﻫﺬا ﻓﻲ ﺑﻌﺾ ﺣﺎﺟﺘﻚ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻭﺻﻠﻪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺛﻢ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻲ ﻳﺎ ﺟﺎﺭﻳﺔ اﺫﻫﺒﻲ ﺑﻬﺬﻩ اﻟﺴﺒﻌﺔ ﻭﺑﻬﺬﻩ اﻟﺨﻤﺴﺔ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻓﻼﻥ ﻭﺑﻬﺬﻩ اﻟﺨﻤﺴﺔ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻓﻼﻥ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺃﻧﻔﺬﻫﺎ ﻓﺮﺟﻊ اﻟﻐﻼﻡ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻋﻤﺮ ﻓﺄﺧﺒﺮﻩ ﻓﻮﺟﺪﻩ ﻗﺪ ﺃﻋﺪ ﻣﺜﻠﻬﺎ ﻟﻤﻌﺎﺫ ﺑﻦ ﺟﺒﻞ ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: اﺫﻫﺐ ﺑﻬﺎ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻣﻌﺎﺫ ﺑﻦ ﺟﺒﻞ ﻭﺗﻠﺒﺚ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺒﻴﺖ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺗﻨﻈﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻳﺼﻨﻊ ﻓﺬﻫﺐ ﺑﻬﺎ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻣﻌﺎﺫ ﺑﻦ ﺟﺒﻞ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﻟﻚ ﺃﻣﻴﺮ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨﻴﻦ: اﺟﻌﻞ ﻫﺬﻩ ﻓﻲ ﺑﻌﺾ ﺣﺎﺟﺘﻚ ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﺭﺣﻤﻪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻭﺻﻠﻪ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻲ ﻳﺎ ﺟﺎﺭﻳﺔ اﺫﻫﺒﻲ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺑﻴﺖ ﻓﻼﻥ ﺑﻜﺬا ﻓﺎﻃﻠﻌﺖ اﻣﺮﺃﺓ ﻣﻌﺎﺫ ﻓﻘﺎﻟﺖ: ﻭاﻟﻠﻪ ﻧﺤﻦ ﻣﺴﺎﻛﻴﻦ ﻓﺄﻋﻄﻨﺎ ﻭﻟﻢ ﻳﺒﻖ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺨﺮﻗﺔ ﺇﻻ ﺩﻳﻨﺎﺭاﻥ ﻓﺮﻣﻰ ﺑﻪﻣﺎ ﺇﻟﻴﻬﺎ ﻭﺭﺟﻊ اﻟﻐﻼﻡ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻋﻤﺮ ﺭﺿﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻨﻪ ﻓﺄﺧﺒﺮﻩ ﻓﺴﺮ ﺑﺬﻟﻚ ﻭﻗﺎﻝ: «ﺇﻧﻬﻢ ﺃﺧﻮﺓ ﺑﻌﻀﻬﻢ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻌﺾ ﺭﺿﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻨﻬﻢ»
